Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer team evened its record at 2-2-0 on the season with a 1-0 win over the Saint Mary’s Gaels Sunday afternoon at the UCR Soccer Stadium. (Box Score)
The play in the first half was mostly between the 18s as the teams combined for just four shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of action. The match opened up after halftime, however, as the team’s peppered the goals with 15 combined shots in the second.
The Highlanders broke the scoreless tie in the 71st minute of play when Aaron Long’s pass from midfield found Cesar Diaz Pizarro streaking down the center of the field. The senior deked a Gaels defender and got off a shot to the upper righthand corner of the goal that found its way past Saint Mary’s keeper Doug Herrick for the lone score of the match.
UC Riverside is back in action this Friday at the UCR Soccer Stadium for a 7 pm meeting with the Runnin Rebels of UNLV.
