Women's Soccer Heads To New Mexico For Pair Of Weekend Matches
9/12/2011 8:59:00 AM | Women's Soccer
Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team (3-4-1) travels to New Mexico this weekend for the NIKE Classic which features matches on Friday, September 16 against North Texas (3:00 pm PT) and on Sunday, September 18 vs. the host Lobos (noon). It is the first meeting for UCR against both teams. (Follow the North Texas Match and the New Mexico match on Game Tracker.)
After scoring seven goals in their previous four matches, the Highlanders managed to dent the net just once in their pair of one-goal losses at the Saint Mary's Tournament last weekend. Kayde Hensley, who entered her senior season without a goal to her credit, leads UC Riverside with three goals on the year including two game-winners against San Jose State and Sacramento State.
North Texas enters the weekend having just been handed their first loss of the season in a 2-0 loss at Baylor. Prior to that, the Mean Green had won five straight matches. They have outscored their opponents 24-6 on the season, and their defense has kept the opposing offenses far away from the box as opponents are averaging fewer than four shots on goal per match against them.
The Lobos have lost two straight matches heading into the weekend. Like North Texas, the New Mexico defense has also been stingy giving up just six goals in eight matches and averaging four opposition shots on goal per match.
GAME NOTES
GOAL!
Kayde Hensley scored the first goal of her collegiate career in a 1-1 double OT tie vs. Idaho on August 21.
Her second goal of the season was the game-winner in a double-overtime victory over San Jose State which gave the Highlanders the team championship at the UC Riverside Women's Soccer Invitational.
She was rewarded by the Big West as the conference defensive player of the week for her efforts against the Spartans and in a 3-0 win over Mississippi State.
Hensley's third goal of the season was also the game-winner coming in the first half of the Highlanders 2-0 win over Southern Utah on September 4.
A JESSICA BY ANY OTHER NAME
UC Riverside incumbent goalkeeper Jessica White was sidelined with an injury for the past six matches, but Jessica Olafsen stepped in admirably posting a goals against average of 0.80 during that span. Olafsen was named the conference defensive player of the week on September 5 as she allowed just one goal, on a penalty kick, in two matches for a goals against average of 0.50 for the week. She also stopped 17 of 18 shots on goal during those two matches.
THE THINEST OF MARGINS I
The final margin in 36 of the Highlanders last 53 matches has been one goal or less including 13 of 18 in 2010 and 5 of 8 in 2011.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES
One year a go, the Highlanders suffered a one-win season that produced just three goals all year long. In 2011, however, UC Riverside already has three wins to its credit and nine scores.
