GAME NOTES
STREAK REMOVER
The Highlanders 3-2 victory over Fairfield on August 27 stopped an 18-match skid which began on October 5 of last season.
ALL-TOURNAMENT
UC Riverside junior Amanda Vialpando was named to the Cal Molten Classic All-Tournament team on August 27 after leading the Highlanders with 50 kills and 4.55 kills per set over the weekend. She posted two double-doubles in three matches, including recording a career-high 26 kills in the final game.
Monique Holt was named to the USD Invitational All-Tournament on September 3 following the Highlanders three matches against Missouri State, San Diego, and Northeastern. Holt averaged 2.12 kills per set and 1.75 kills per set over the three matches while recording a career-high 14 kills against Northeastern.
FIVE-SET THRILLERS
Over the past three seasons, UCR has a 6-3 record in matches that have gone five sets. In fact, in the Highlanders last nine wins, six of them have been of the five-set variety.
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
The Highlanders 2011 schedule features seven matches against 2010 NCAA Tournament participants. In the lastest AVCA Division I Poll, one of UCR's upcoming opponents is ranked among the top-25 in the country (Long Beach State). The Highlanders already squared off against two ranked opponents when they tangled with then #3 Cal on August 26 and then #20 San Diego on September 3.
2010 STRUGGLES
UCR posted a 2-30 record last season while going winless in Big West Conference play. Those marks tie the 2006 Highlanders team for the least amount of wins in the program's Division I history.
ALL-BIG WEST
Two members of the Highlanders were named to the Big West All-Conference team at the conclusion of the 2010 season as senior Kelly Simpson and sophomore Shelby LeDuff were each named Honorable Mention.
Simpson emerged as one of the top players on the Highlanders squad last season as she led the team in kills and service aces while finishing second in blocks and digs. The Modesto, CA native had seven double-doubles and tallied 10 or more kills 17 times.
Although LeDuff played just 61 sets before an injury ended her season, she led UCR with 2.90 kills per set, including a 3.19 average in league play. She tallied three double-doubles on the season and had nine matches with 10 or more kills, including six of her last seven.
