UCR Outrebounded And Outshot In 63-43 Loss At UC Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara, CA - The UC Riverside women's basketball team traveled to UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon looking for its first Big West victory of the season, but fell short, 63-43, to the Gauchos at The Thunderdome.
The Highlanders (2-15, 0-6) were down by eight points at the half, but were outscored 32-20 in the second period as the Gauchos (7-8, 2-2) went on for the victory.
Dynese Adams led UCR with a career-high 16 points on 7-of-16 shooting including 2-for-5 from beyond the arc, while Natasha Hadley added 14 points and five boards. The duo combined for 30 of the team's 43 points, with the next high scorer being Jazzmin Lewis with four points.
To open the game, Sweets Underwood scored the first eight points for the Gauchos, and Adams scored the first five for the Highlanders as UCSB took an 8-5 lead six minutes into the game.
UC Santa Barbara then scored six of the next eight points, but the Highlanders countered with an 8-2 run, including six straight from Hadley, to cut the lead to 16-14 with 7:22 remaining in the half.
UC Riverside cut the lead to two on one more occasion in the half, but UCSB scored the final four points of the period to take a 31-23 lead into the locker room.
Both teams hit four field goals to open the second period, but UCSB hit two of them from three-point range to open up a 12 point lead, 41-29, at the 15:48 mark. Adams then scored five straight for UCR as the lead was back to seven, 41-34, but the Gauchos responded with five of their own to extend the lead back to 12, 46-34, with 12:42 remaining in the game.
The teams traded buckets over the next few minutes with the Highlanders never getting closer than 10. UC Santa Barbara then went on a 9-0 run to open up a 19-point lead, 59-40, with 2:43 left, as the game ended with the Gauchos earning the 63-43 victory.
The Highlanders improved their shooting from the first and second periods, hitting 29.2 percent and 37.5 percent respectively for a 33.3 percent (16-48) overall clip. UCSB concluded the game hitting 41.3 percent (26-63) of its shots, and outrebounding UCR 45 to 26.
UC Riverside now takes a break from Big West Conference play as the team travels to CSU Bakersfield on Wednesday, January 18 for a 7:00 pm tip in Bakersfield, CA.
