Early Second-Half Run Gives Titans 72-61 Win Over Men's Basketball
1/18/2012 5:55:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Fullerton, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team traveled to Cal State Fullerton Wednesday evening looking to improve to 5-1 in conference and set up a possible showdown with front-running Long Beach State for first place in the Big West next Thursday. Unfortunately, the Titans used a 17-4 run to open the second half turning a one-point UCR advantage into an 11-point lead that they would never relinquish.
Thing looked good for the Highlanders in the first half as they led by as many as nine thanks to a 13-3 run midway through the period.
UC Riverside still led by eight, 26-18 with 5:30 on the clock, but Fullerton ended the period on a 9-2 run to cut the Highlanders advantage to one, 28-27, at the break.
Kevin Bradshaw paced the Highlanders' attack on both ends of the floor during the first half, drawing three charges, as UCR forced 11 Titans turnovers, and making all three of his shots in the period for seven points. Fullerton's DJ Seeley led all scorers at the break with 12.
The Titans scored 11 of the first 14 points of the second period, forcing Head Coach Jim Wooldridge to use two timeouts before the 16-minute media break.
Try as they might, the Highlanders just couldn't slow down Cal State Fullerton's offense in the second as the Titans made 66.7 percent of their shots in the period. Kwame Vaughn scored 19 of his game-high 28 in the second, while Seeley chipped in with 10 of his 22 after intermission.
Meanwhile, UC RIverside's scoring trio of Phil Martin, Robert Smith and Kareem Nitoto struggled to find their shot all night going a combined 10 for 34 in the game, and just four for 15 in the second half.
The Highlanders still trailed by 10, 61-51, with 4:22 to go, but two BJ Shearry buckets, a Martin lay up and a pair of Smith free throws cut the advantage to five, 64-59. But it was Seeley's night, as his three from the left wing bounced off the rim high into the air, and fell through to put Fullerton back up eight. UC Riverside would never draw closer than six the rest of the way.
The win improves the Titans to 11-6 overall and 3-2 in conference while the Highlanders fall to 10-9 and 4-2 in the Big West.
The Highlanders have the week off before returning to the hardwood on Thursday, January 26 at the Student Rec Center vs. front-running Long Beach State.
