Nottingam's 21 Points Not Enough As UC Davis Wins 70-53

Riverside, CA - Tre'Shonti Nottingham scored a game-high 21 points for the UC Riverside women's basketball team on Thursday evening, but it wasn't enough as the Highlanders dropped a 70-53 decision to UC Davis in Big West Conference action at the Student Recreation Center.
The Highlanders fall to 2-12 on the season and 0-3 in league play, tying the 2002-03 squad as the only other UCR team to start conference play 0-3. The Aggies improve to 9-5 overall and 1-1 in Big West play.
UC Riverside trailed by 11 points at the break, but went on a 15-2 run over the first 4:36 of the second period to take a 33-31 lead. Nottingham scored eight of her game-high 21 points during that run, including the last six straight as a three-pointer and three-point play put the Highlanders up.
However, UC Davis scored nine unanswered points and UCR went 0-for-4 from the field as the Aggies went back up by seven, 40-33, with 12:18 left in the game.
UCD's lead fluctuated between seven and 14 points until less than a minute remaining in the game when they went up by their largest margin, 49-68, with 19 seconds left. The teams' traded points at the free throw line over the last remaining seconds as the Aggies came away with the 70-53 victory.
In the first period, UC Riverside and UC Davis traded buckets through the first 10 minutes of play with neither team taking a lead greater than two points.
The Aggies then turned a 9-8 advantage into a 15-8 lead with 9:16 left in the half. The Highlanders closed the gap to five points on three more occasions, but the Aggies scored six of the last seven points in the half as they opened a 29-18 advantage entering the locker rooms.
UCD forced 17 Highlanders turnovers in the half, and scored 16 points off those miscues.
For the fifth time this season, UC Riverside outshot their opponent in a loss as the Highlanders hit 39.5 percent (17-43) of their field goals compared to 36.8 percent (21-57) for the Aggies.
The Highlanders continue their two-game homestand with a 5:00 pm tip against Pacific on Saturday, January 7 at the Student Recreation in Riverside.
