Box Score—Long Beach 3, UC Riverside 1
Riverside, CA—Ashley Cox had a career-high 25 kills Thursday evening for the UC Riverside Volleyball Team, but it wasn't enough as Long Beach State escaped with the 3-1 victory.
The 49ers (10-8, 5-2) won set one 25-15, but the Highlanders (5-14, 0-6) responded with a 25-23 second-set victory. LBSU went up 2-1 in the match with a win in set three, but UCR led 19-14 late in the fourth set. The Highlanders appeared poised to push the match into five sets, but Long Beach State made a run outscoring UCR 11-3 for the come-from-behind 25-22 victory.
Tied at six early in set one, the 49ers scored five straight to go up 11-6, but UCR scored four of the next five points to cut the lead back to two, 12-10. Long Beach State then went on a run, posting eight consecutive points to open the set at 20-10.
Cox recorded three straight kills for the Highlanders as the team got four points back, but LBSU outscored UCR 5-1 over the remainder of the set for the 25-15 win.
Neither team led by more than a point early in the second set as there were nine ties scores through 9-9. The teams continued to trade points until UCR took the lead for good, going up 14-13.
The Highlanders advantage peaked at three points on three occasions, the last at 20-17, but Long Beach State closed to one, 20-19. An Amanda Vialpando kill put UC Riverside back up by two, and the teams traded points until set-point with the Highlanders up 24-22.
A 49ers block made it a one point game, 24-23, but another VIalpando kill combined with a blocking error by LBSU tied the match at 1-1 with the Highlanders 25-23 victory.
Set three was all Long Beach State as they turned a 3-3 tie into a 10-3 advantage. The Highlanders never recovered as they hit just .065 during the set as the 49ers won 25-12.
UC Riverside got back on track in the fourth set, scoring four straight points to open a 13-8 advantage. LBSU eventually got within two, 16-14, but the Highlanders responded with three straight Jasmin White kills to go up 19-14.
The 49ers continued to rally and got within one, 19-18, before a Vialpando kill stopped the rally. The teams traded points and UCR led 21-19 before Long Beach closed out the set scoring six of the final seven points to earn the 25-22 victory.
In addition to her game-high 25 kills, Cox added 14 digs for the Highlanders while Vialpando and White both added eight kills.
The Highlanders now host UC Irvine on Saturday, October 13 beginning at 7 pm PT at the SRC Arena in Riverside.
