Men's Soccer Falls 3-2 In Double Overtime To Cal State Fullerton
10/20/2012 5:58:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Riverside—Hayden Leslie's header with 13 seconds to go in regulation sent the UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team into overtime against Cal State Fullerton Saturday evening, but it was the Titans securing the golden goal with 1:46 to go in the second OT to pick up the win (Box Score).
The loss drops the Highlanders (9-6-0, 2-5-0) to third place in the South Division one point behind the Titans. Cal State Northridge (11-5-0, 5-2-0) beat UC Irvine (4-11-1, 1-6-0) by a 3-1 score Saturday, and now has an eight point lead over the rest of the field with three matches to go.
Neither team scored in the first half as they combined for just three shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of play. All that changed with 13:39 gone in the second when Ian Ramos sent a cross through the UCR box that Jameson Campbell turned into a 1-0 Titans advantage.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Eric Gonzalez blasted a shot from 30 yards out off the left post, and Jimmy Martinez got the putback to tie the score at one.
The score remained tied until the 86th minute when the Highlanders were called for a hand ball inside their 18, and Ramos converted on the penalty kick to put Cal State Fullerton back on top.
UC Riverside continued to press forward, and with 25 seconds to go, they were awarded a free kick on the right side of the Titans defensive end. Gonzalez sent the restart into the box, and Hayden Leslie rose above the defense heading the ball past Bryan Escalante with 13 seconds to go in the match.
The teams were still tied after the first extra period, but with 1:46 to go in the match, Mark Vasquez sent a shot through the Highlanders box, and Gerzon Blano redirected it past UCR keeper Ashkan Khosravi to give the Titans the win.
UC Riverside is off until Saturday, October 27 when they host Cal State Northridge at 7 pm PT.
