Men's Soccer Falls To Cal State Northridge On Senior Day, 2-1
10/27/2012 4:56:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team honored its senior class Saturday evening prior to its Big West Conference match against first place Cal State Northridge, but it was the 23rd-ranked Matadors who scored two late goals to held on for a 2-1 victory (Box Score).
The teams played to a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes of play, but with 3:38 gone in the second, CSUN's Edwin Rivas rocketed a loose ball from just inside the right side of the UCR 18 past goalkeeper Ashkan Khosravi to put the Matadors up 1-0.
Rivas dented the back of the net again in the 67th minute as David Turcious found him with a through ball that set up a one-on-one situation with Khosravi. Rivas drove left and created enough room to give Northridge a 2-0 lead.
The Highlanders pressed forward, and with under three minutes to play secured just their second corner kick of the match. Eric Gonzalez's left-footed kick was deflected by a CSUN defender into back of the Matadors net for an on goal cutting the lead in half.
That was all UC Riverside could muster, however, as Northridge held on for the win.
Coupled with Cal State Fullerton's 1-0 victory over UC Irvine, the Highlanders find themselves in a situation where they might need to win both of their final matches in order to secure a berth in the Big West Conference Tournament. UCR trails the Titans for the second spot in the South Division by four points.
The Highlanders travel to UC Irvine this Wednesday for a 7 pm meeting with the Anteaters before ending the regular season at Fullerton on Saturday, November 3 at 7 pm.
