Men's Soccer's Overtime Victory Over UC Irvine Sets Up Saturday Showdown vs. Cal State Fullerton
10/31/2012 8:25:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Irvine, CA—They needed an overtime period to do it, but the UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team upended UC Irvine 4-3 on Wednesday evening setting up a Saturday showdown with Cal State Fullerton for the final Big West South Division postseason berth.
The Highlanders trailed Fullerton by four points heading into this evening's action, but UCR's victory coupled with the Titans 1-0 loss to Cal State Northridge, reduced the advantage to one. That means that the winner of Saturday's Riverside vs. Fullerton match, which kicks off at 7 pm PT, goes on to the conference tournament. Should the match end in a tie, the Titans would get the nod.
Juan Valladolid got the Highlanders on the board first Wednesday when he headed Eric Gonzalez's corner kick past Anteaters keeper Elliott Farmer with 5:21 gone in the match.
Less than 12 minutes later, UC Irvine tied the match thanks to Thom Moreira's first goal of the season. It didn't take long for UC Riverside to regain the lead, however, as Humberto Santiago drilled a Juan Mendoza free kick into the left side of the 'Eaters net putting UCR back on top.
That score held up until the 54th minute as UC Irvine tied the match once again when Christopher Santana beat Highlanders goalkeeper Ashkan Khosravi to the near post.
Just over four minutes later, the Anteaters took their first lead of the evening as Tarek Morad used his heel to slide a Santana free kick just inside the right post.
Richie Osborne's chip shot off the post found its way across the goal line in the 64th minute tying the match yet again. That score would hold up through regulation, and the Highlanders found themselves playing bonus soccer for the fifth time this season.
With six minutes and 12 seconds gone in the first overtime period, it was Osborne coming through again with his second goal of the night. Gonzalez sent a cross into the Anteaters box, and Julio Reyes redirected it to Osborne who pounded home the game-winner.
