Second-Half Penalty Kick Gives Sac State 1-0 Win Over Men's Soccer
10/7/2012 3:38:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Sacramento—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team traveled to Sacramento State on Sunday in hopes of evening its record in conference play, but the Highlanders' offense struggled for the second consecutive match, and a second half penalty kick sent them to a 1-0 defeat (Box Score).
The win kept the Hornets (7-4-1, 4-0-0) perfect in Big West play this season and in first place in the North Division. UCR dropped to 8-4-0 overall and 1-3-0 in conference. The Highlanders are still in second place in the South pending the outcomes of the Cal State Fullerton (4-8-1, 0-2-1) and UC Irvine (3-8-1, 0-3-0) matches later today.
Sacramento State and UC Riverside played to a scoreless first half tie with each team recording six shots. Things got physical in the second 45 minutes of play as the Highlanders were whistled for three yellow cards and a pair of red cards, and the Hornets picked up two yellows and a red.
UCR's second red card led to a Sacramento State penalty kick in the 72nd minute of play, which Max Alvarez converted for what would prove to be the only score of the match.
The Highlanders remain on the road this week with a single match at Cal State Northridge on Saturday, October 13. Kickoff is slated for 7 pm PT.
