Career-High 29 From Nottingham Helps UCR Pick Up First Win Of Season, 79-71, At Pepperdine

Malibu, CA - The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team survived a late push by Pepperdine Monday evening, but held on to pick up its first win of the 2012-13 season, 79-71, at Firestone Fieldhouse.
The Highlanders (1-1) led by as much as 22 points in the second period, but the Waves (1-1) used a multitude of runs to eventually tie the game at 71 with 2:23 remaining.
A pair of free throws by Kiara Harewood started an 8-0 run by UC Riverside as Tre'Shonti Nottingham added four from the line and Jamila Williams had a jumper to push the lead out to 79-71.
The Waves could not convert on any of their final six shots, as the Highlanders held on for the victory.
Nottingham led the way offensively for UCR, scoring a career-high 29 points on 8-of-15 shooting including 13-of-14 from the free throw line. Brittany Crain added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Highlanders while Dynese Adams chipped in 14 points.
In the first half, Pepperdine opened a 6-2 lead after two minutes of play, but the Highlanders used a 13-2 run over the next 3:21 to take a 15-8 advantage. Nottingham scored six of UCR's points during the run, while Crain and Harewood added a pair, and Adams connected on a three-pointer.
The teams traded points until the Highlanders used another 13-2 run, turning a 29-21 margin into a 42-23 advantage. Crain capped off the rally with a four-point play at the 4:22 juncture.
The Waves scored six of the final eight points of the half, however, cutting UC Riverside's lead to 44-29 entering the break.
Three Highlanders scored in double-figures in the period led by Adams' and Nottingham's 12 points apiece, and Crain's 10. UCR was hot from the field, hitting 54.3 percent of its shots, while capitalizing on fast break opportunities by scoring 14.
Pepperdine opened the second half with back-to-back three-pointers, cutting the Highlanders lead to nine. The blue and gold responded, and two free throws from Adams started a 14-2 run as the lead grew to 58-37.
It was the Waves turn for a run, outscoring UCR 15-3 over the next three minutes and 55 seconds as the lead again dipped to nine, 61-52. The teams traded points until Pepperdine again went on a spurt, using a 12-2 run to tie the game at 71 with 2:23 remaining.
Harewood's free throws started the Highlanders final push, as UC Riverside evened their record to 1-1 on the season.
For the game, UCR hit 44.4 percent (28-63) of its shots including hitting 44.4 percent (4-9) from beyond the arc. The Waves hit 39.1 percent (25-64) from the field while connecting on nine three-pointers.
The Highlanders now return to the Inland Empire to host Utah State on Thursday, November 15 at 2:00 pm PT at the SRC Arena.
