Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team has one more game before breaking for finals next week as the Highlanders travel to Pepperdine for a Wednesday, December 5 meeting with the Waves beginning at 7 pm PT.
UCR (2-6) is coming off of a 69-63 victory over Northern Colorado (box score/recap) that snapped a three-game losing skid, and marked the debut of freshman Taylor Johns, who missed the first seven games of the season with an injury. The 6-7 forward grabbed 12 rebounds in his first action for the Highlanders setting a program Division I era record for most rebounds in a debut contest.
UC Riverside is using a balanced scoring attack this season with four players scoring between 11.4 and 9.4 points per game. Junior Chris Harriel leads the Highlanders followed by freshman Josh Fox at 10.3 points and junior Chris Patton at 10.0. The last time UCR boasted three double-digit scorers at season's end was in 2006-07 when Larry Cunningham (13.7), Henrik Thomsen (10.6) and Justin Bell (10.2) all reached that plateau.
Pepperdine (4-3) had a four-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, December 1 in a 67-63 overtime loss at Utah State. Prior to that, they had a pair of double digit wins over Montana State (76-66) and UC Irvine (72-62) and two overtime victories over Washington State (58-56) and Houston Baptist (57-53).
Lorne Jackson leads Pepperdine's offense averaging 17.0 points per game. Stacy Davis is second on the squad at a 12.6 points per game clip and leads the Waves with 8.0 rebounds per contest.
UC Riverside and Pepperdine have faced off against one another on four occasions (All-Time Results), but none since a 66-59 Highlanders home win back on December 15, 1977. The Highlanders are 1-3 overall against the Waves including an 0-2 mark on the road.
