Men's Basketball Drops 62-40 Decision On The Road At Pepperdine
12/5/2012 8:58:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Malibu, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team took a trip up the coast Wednesday evening in search of the team's first road win of the season, but the Highlanders offense went cold midway through the first half, and the Waves capitalized en route to a 62-40 victory.
Datyon Boddie, making the first start of his career in place of the injured Chris Harriel, earned his keep in the early going scoring five of UCR's first 14 points as the Highlanders (2-7) built a 14-6 lead with just over eight minutes gone in the first period.
Following the 12 minute media timeout, however, it was the Waves (5-3) doing most of the damage as they switched to a zone defense that seemed to cause problems for UC Riverside. For the remainder of the period, the Highlanders made two of 13 shots from the floor including one of four from long distance. Over the final 6:02 of the first, the Waves outscored UCR 11-0 to take a 25-19 lead into the break.
Unfortunately, the lid stayed on the basket to start the second period as well, as the Highlanders missed six shots and turned the ball over on an offensive foul on their first four possessions. Meanwhile, Pepperdine scored on back-to-back three-pointers and a fast break layup to go up 33-19 with just under two minutes gone in the second period.
Robert Smith ended the run with a three-pointer just under a minute later, but the Waves were able to maintain a double-digit lead for the remainder of the second half,
Pepperdine's Jordan Baker led all scorer's with 13 points off of the bench. He was joined in double figures by Lorne Jackson and Nikolas Skouen, each of whom chipped in with 11 points.
Chris Patton and Josh Fox each scored eight points to lead the Highlanders.
UC Riverside takes 10 days off for final exams before traveling to USC for a Saturday, Decmber 15 game against the Trojans. Tip is slated for 7 pm PT.
