Phil Martin's 21 Lifts Men's Basketball Past Southern Utah, 57-52

UC Riverside 57, Southern Utah 52 - Box Score
Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team didn't take their first lead of the second half until 2:29 remaining in the game, but it gave them a lead they would never relinquish as the Highlanders upended Southern Utah, 57-52, in their 2012 Sears BracketBusters matchup.
And the Highlanders accomplished it without the service of two starters—guard Robert Smith and forward BJ Shearry—both of whom missed the game with injuries.
The teams played about as close a game as you can play with neither team leading by more than six points the entire way.
It was a 28-28 game at the half, but the Thunderbirds scored the first four points of the second period and nine of the first 12 to open up their biggest lead, 37-31 with just over 16 minutes to go in the game.
Southern Utah still led by five, 44-39, with 11:02 on the clock, but the Highlanders scored the next five points on a Phil Martin dunk and free throw and a pair of freebies by David Chavarria to tie the game at 44.
It was still a tie game at 50 apiece with less than four minutes on the clock, when the Highlanders got a defensive stop and Daymond Cowlah appeared to have scored and drawn a foul on a fastbreak layup, but the officials called an offensive foul on Cowlah sending the ball back the other way.
It was still tied at 50 on the Highlanders next possession, but this time down the floor the Highlanders converted as Martin's jumper put them on top for the first time in the period, 52-50.
UC Riverside got another stop, and Cowlah drew a foul sinking one of two to put the Highlanders up three with less than a minute to go.
Jackson Stevenett banked in a jumper with 26 seconds to go to reduce the lead to one, 53-52. The Thunderbirds fouled Martin as he crossed the timeline. He hit both, but it was still a one possession game with 20.7 seconds on the clock.
Stevenett missed a three-pointer that would have tied the game with six seconds to go. Cowlah corralled the rebound, was fouled, and hit both free throws for the final 57-52 margin of victory.
Martin led all scorers with 21 while Cowlah and Chavarria eached chipped in with 10 apiece. Ray Jones Jr. paced the Thunderbirds with 18 points, but 14 of them came in the first period. Stevenett added 13, and Matt Massey scored 10
The Highlanders hit the road this week heading to Cal State Northridge on Wednesday, February 22 for a 7:05 pm PM tip against the Matadors.
