Twelfth-Ranked Arizona State Takes Two Of Three With 11-2 Win

Tempe, AZ—The UC Riverside Baseball Team was looking to win its first three-game series over a ranked opponent since they upended Cal Poly two games to one at the end of the 2009 season, but twelfth-ranked Arizona State took the rubber match Sunday afternoon with an 11-2 win.
The Highlanders (3-4) staked starter Trevor Frank (0-2) to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Devyn Bolasky opened the game with a single up the middle, moved to second on an Eddie Young sacrifice bunt and scored two batters later on Vince Gonzalez's single through the right side.
But UCR didn't hold the lead for long giving back two in the bottom half of the inning thanks to two errors, a walk, a single and a ground out.
Arizona State (5-1) made it a 5-1 game in the bottom of the third as they touched Frank for three more base knocks and a pair of walks. The junior right-hander's day came to an end the following inning when he allowed a one-out double to Kasey Coffman and a two-out RBI single to left from Joey DeMichele.
Mark Garcia came in to pick up the final out of the inning, and threw a scoreless fifth. By that time, the Highlanders had cut the ASU lead to 6-2 courtesy of a Nick Vilter lead-off double and a two groundouts.
Antonio Gonzales relieved Garcia, and faced the minimum three hitters in his first inning of work, but in the bottom of the seventh, he allowed a lead-off homer to DeMichele and a single to left off the bat of Abe Ruiz.
Gavin Mills came out of the pen to try and silence the Sun Devils bats, but he surrendered a single to center by Max Rossiter and a walk to James McDonald to load the bases.
A pair of sacrifice flies made it 9-2 Arizona State, before Clayton Prestridge, Vilter and Bart Steponovich teamed up to end the inning by throwing out McDonald at the plate after an Andrew Aplin double.
ASU picked up two more runs in the bottom of the eighth as Rouric Bridgewatter homered to plate Drew Stankiewicz who doubled two batters earlier.
The Highlanders, meanwhile, had difficulty solving the Sun Devils pitching after the first several innings, picking up just one hit over the final four innings of play.
Trevor Williams (2-0) got the start for ASU allowing six hits in six innings, and Adrian Gomez and Robert Ravago each threw a hitless inning of relief. Jake Barrett closed out the ninth working out of a no-out, runners on first and second jam to seal the victory.
UC Riverside returns home this week to take on San Diego at the Riverside Sports Complex, Tuesday, February 28. First pitch is slated for 6 pm.
