Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team returns home Tuesday evening trying to move back to the .500 mark with a 6 pm PT meeting with the San Diego Toreros.
The Highlanders took one of three games over the weekend at No. 12 Arizona State winning the middle game of the series, 3-1, but dropping games one and three by a combined 22-5 margin.
Eddie Orozco got the victory Saturday going six innings, allowing just four hits, striking out three and walking three. Ben Doucette then threw 2.1 shutout innings of relief, and Joie Dunyon recorded the final two outs of the game to secure the win. It was just the sixth victory in 40 games for the Highlanders against the Sun Devils.
San Diego comes into Tuesday night's game with a 5-2 record riding a four-game winning streak. All four victories came at the Toreros' USD Tournament over the weekend. Both Toreros losses came at Sam Houston State to start the season. Coincidentally, Sam Houston is next up on the Highlanders' schedule for a three-game series this weekend.
USD is pounding the ball for a slash line of .380/.438/.469 this season compared to UC Riverside's .247/.364/.292. While the Highlanders have just one batter hitting above .300—Devyn Bolasky at .500—San Diego boasts eight starters above that mark.
The Toreros' pitching staff brings a 2.92 earned run average into the game with 58 strikeouts in 61.2 innings of work. They will battle through spates of wildness, however, as their 36 walks can attest. UC Riverside's hurlers have a 3.63 earned run average with 41 punch outs in 62.0 innings of work.
Mitch Patito (1-0, 0.00) will take the mound for UC Riverside this evening for his second-ever collegiate start.
