Women's Basketball Weathers Second-Half 49ers Rally In 75-71 Win

Riverside, CA - Tre’Shonti Nottingham’s 20-point contribution helped the UC Riverside women’s basketball team hang on for the 75-71 win against Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon following a big second half by the 49ers. Long Beach State was able to break UCR’s momentum with a 10-0 run in the second period and big plays from both Hallie Meneses and Tipesa Moorer, each of whom totaled 21 points.
The Highlanders led by 19 points at the break, but Long Beach started the second half with a three-point basket by Meneses, sparking a seven-point run against UC Riverside.
The 49ers picked up a technical foul with 14:09 remaining in the half, and Nottingham knocked down both free throws to put the Highlanders back up by 14, 43-39.
A Harewood three-pointer put UC Riverside up by 15, but the 49ers scored the next 10 points, cutting the lead to 60-55 with 4:21 left in the game.
The Highlanders responded by pushing their lead back to nine with 2:14 left, and still led by eight with 39 seconds to go. LBSU made a final push, however, outscoring UCR 8-2 over the next 34 seconds to get within a bucket, 73-71, with five seconds remaining.
Mary Ochiltree fouled Nottingham on the inbound, sending the junior to the line with four seconds on the clock. Nottingham hit both from the charity stripe and Moorer’s last second layup was off the mark as UCR held on for the 75-71 victory.
Nottingham led the Highlanders in scoring with 20 points followed closely by Hadley with 16 and Kiara Harewood with 13.
The Highlanders established an early 10-3 lead after Nottingham and Harewood each added a pair of three's to the scoreboard. UC Riverside continued to push the lead as a 9-0 run extended the advantage to 19-5.
UCR's Britany Palmer closed out the first half of play with a last second three-point bank shot giving the Highlanders a 19 point advantage over the 49ers, 39-20.
Hadley led all players in the half with 11 points, and the Highlanders outrebounded the 49ers 24 to 12 in the period.
UC Riverside outshot Long Beach State from the field, shooting 45.3 percent compared to 39.0 percent. The Highlanders were also 38.5 percent from the three-point arc (5-for-13).
UC Riverside now hit the road for a 5:00 pm game at the University of Pacific on Thursday, February 9 in Stockton, CA.
