Softball Opens 2012 Season Friday At Fresno State Tournament

Riverside—The UC Riverside softball team opens the 2012 season this weekend with five games at the Fresno State Tournament in Fresno, CA. Live coverage of every game may be found at gobulldogs.com.
The Highlanders begin with an 11:30 am contest against Sacramento State on Friday, followed by a meeting with North Dakota State at 2:00 pm later that day.
On Saturday, UCR will face Toledo at 9:00 am, then play the host Bulldogs at 2:00 pm. The tournament concludes with another game against Sacramento State on Sunday at 11:30 am.
GAME NOTES
POWER SURGE
UC Riverside had a grand total of two home runs in its 25 non-conference games last season, but in league play, the Highlanders were queens of the long ball, hitting a Big West-best 22 homers. Leading the charge was Brittany Keeney with five jacks.
POWER SURGE II
The Highlanders hit three home runs in game two of the Pacific doubleheader on April 22, 2011, and again at Cal State Northridge on May 8, 2011. The three home runs tie for the third-most home runs in a single game in the Division I history of the program.
POWER SURGE III
From April 16-30 of last year, the Highlanders hit at least one home run in each of their six games. The six-game streak ties the UCR Division I record for most consecutive games with at least one home run.
EXTRA INNINGS
UCR defeated Cal State Northridge on May 8, 2011 in 11 innings, just the second game last season that went into extras. The last time the Highlanders played at least that many innings was back on April 24, 2010—a 13 inning battle which the team also won, 4-3 over Pacific.
Jordyn McDonald pitched all 11 innings in UCR's 6-3 victory at Cal State Northridge on May 8—the second-most innings pitched in a single game by a Highlanders pitcher in the team's DI era. Amy Lwin owns the record, having pitched all 13 innings in that April 24, 2010 win.
CATCH ME IF YOU CAN
As a team, the Highlanders led the Big West with 53 stolen bases and 57 attempts in 2010. In fact, UCR became the first team in league history to record 50+ stolen bases while not being caught at least 10 times.
The 53 stolen bases in 2010 set the Highlanders Division I program record for most stolen bases in a single-season, but UCR surpassed that in 2011, recording 63 stolen bases in 74 attempts.
AGGIE STAMPEDE
UCR allowed UC Davis to score 17 runs against them in an April 30, 2011 loss—the most runs allowed against a Big West opponent in the program's DI history.
TODAY'S HIGH
The Highlanders scored a season-high 11 runs in their 13-11 loss to Boise State on February 25, 2011, and tied that mark at UC Santa Barbara in an 11-8 win on April 17, 2011. The 11 runs scored are the most since the team plated that many against Harvard on March 14, 2010. The 13-11 loss to the Broncos is also the most runs scored in a loss in the Division I history of the program.
NO HIT
UC Santa Barbara shutout the Highlanders and held them hitless in a 3-0 loss on April 16, 2011. It was the first time the team had been no-hit all season, and just the third in program Division I history. The last two occasions came during the 2002 campaign.
SPEED DEMONS
The Highlanders set a Division I, single-game program record with eight stolen bases against Saint Louis on March 11, 2011.
DOUBLE VISION
Kayla White recorded 14 doubles last season, setting the program's Division I era record for most doubles in a season. The UCR all-time record for most doubles in a season is 18.
NOT SO SWEET 16
UC Riverside pounded out a season-high 16 hits in a 12-9 loss to Idaho State on March 4, 2011. The 16 hits tie the Division I record for most hits in a single game.
NOT THE RECORD YOU WANT BROKEN
The Highlanders allowed #10 Washington to score 23 runs against them on February 11, 2011, breaking the program's Division I record for most runs allowed.
ALL-BIG WEST
The UC Riverside softball team placed three players on the 2011 All-Big West Team. Kayla White was named to the first team—just the third Highlanders player in the program's Division I history to gain a spot on the league's top squad—while Kameryn Hebenton and Brittany Keeney were named to the All-Big West Second Team.
COACHING CHANGES
UC Riverside will have two new faces in the dugout this season, as Michell Vlahos joins the Highlanders as an assistant coach, and former player Kameryn Hebenton joins the staff as a volunteer coach.
