Four UCR Errors Help Sam Houston State Take Game One, 9-4

Hunstville, TX—The UC Riverside Baseball Team headed to Sam Houston State this weekend in the hopes that the Lone Star State had the cure for what ails them, but the Highlanders committed four errors on the night as the Bearkats came away with a 9-4 victory.
UCR (3-6) got on the board first as the second batter of the game, Phil Holinsworth, drilled the Highlanders first home run of the season down the right field line.
But that lead didn't hold up for long as the Luke Plucheck reached on an error by third baseman Cody Hough, and came around to score following singles by Anthony Azar and Kevin Miller.
UC Riverside regained the lead in the top of the second when Eddie Young stole home as Sam Houston State (5-4) converted a 6 to 3 to 4 to 3 double play.
But the Bearkats scored another unearned run in the bottom half of the inning as Jake Arrington opened the frame with a double to left, and advanced to third on a throwing error by UCR pitcher Dylan Stuart (1-2). Corey Toups' sacrifice fly tied the game at two apiece.
Sam Houston State pitcher Cody Dickson (1-1) settled down after the first two innings holding the Highlanders without a hit in the third, fourth and fifth, and giving up just an infield single in both the sixth and seventh.
Stuart wasn't so fortunate as UCR committed errors in the third and fourth innings that contributed to a pair of unearned runs and a 5-2 deficit for the Highlanders through four innings of play.
In the bottom of the fifth, UC Riverside finally enjoyed a three-up, three-down inning on defense, and they retired the Bearkats in order again in the sixth.
Stuart came out to start the bottom of the seventh inning, but after loading the bases with just one out, he gave way to reliever Donovan Gonzales. The junior right-hander gave up a sacrifice fly to Azar to make it 6-2 Bearkats, and Miller doubled down the left field line to score two more. Tate Baker then singled down the left-field line to give Sam Houston State a seven-run cushion before Gonzalez finally recorded the third out of the inning.
The Highlanders got back on the board in the top half of the eighth innings thanks to an RBI triple by Holinsworth and a Clayton Prestridge single, but they could get no closer, and the Bearkats had game one of the three-game series in hand.
The Highlanders and Bearkats go back at it on Saturday, March 3 at 2 pm PT.
