Fresno, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team found itself in a pitcher's duel Saturday evening at Fresno State, but it was an unearned run that proved to be the difference as the Highlanders dropped a 2-1 decision to the Bulldogs.
David Andriese, playing his first game since suffering an injury on February 18th of this year, helped put the Highlanders (7-10) on the board in the top of the second inning as he beat out a one-out, infield single to third. Drake Zarate followed with another infield single, this one to short, and Andriese moved to third on a throwing error by shortstop Chris Mariscal. Bart Steponovich then brought Andriese plateward on a fielder's choice to make it 1-0 Highlanders.
The Bulldogs (12-10) took the lead in the bottom of the third, however, as Taylor Tempel started off the inning reaching on an error by UCR third baseman Cody Hough. Jake Alvares followed with a single to left, which moved Tempel to second.
Both runners moved up 90 feet during Patrick Hutcheson's at bat, and Mariscal's single through the left side brought Tempel and Alvarez home.
The Highlanders had additional opportunities to score, but couldn't quite solve Fresno State starter Justin Haley. In the top of the fifth, Jake Gallaway singled to start the inning, and Phil Holinsworth drew a walk one out later. A wild pitch put both of them in scoring position, but UCR couldn't capitalize.
One inning later, Andriese doubled to right with one out, and Zarate singled through the left side to put runners on the corners, but Steponovich grounded into a double play to end the threat.
In the top of the seventh, Devyn Bolasky singled to left with one out, and Holinsworth doubled to left center. One out later, Fresno State intentionally walked Eddie Young to load the bases, but Hough struck out stranding all three.
That ended Haley's (3-1) evening as he finished with a line of seven innings pitched, nine hits allowed and three walks, but just one run and eight strikeouts.
Thomas Harlan pitched the eighth and ninth innings for the Bulldogs, and he struck out four and walked just one to earn the save.
Eddie Orozco (3-2) went six innings for UCR allowing eight hits and one walk while striking out five. Mitch Patito threw one-and-a-third scoreless innings, and Ben Doucette pitched a scoreless eighth,
The rubber match between the Highlanders and Bulldogs is slated for 1:05 pm tomorrow.
