Santa Barbara, CA—Eddie Orozco struck out eight and every member of the Highlanders batting order picked up at least one hit as UC Riverside (8-12, 1-1) evened its series with UC Santa Barbara (13-12, 1-1) at one game apiece with a 4-1 win Saturday afternoon. (Box Score)
The Highlanders had lost three in a row and four of their last five heading into Saturday's game, and Orozco proved to be just what the doctor ordered. Outside of Brandon Trinkwon, who went four for four on the day, the rest of the Gauchos were stymied managing just four base hits.
The UCR offense gave Orozco (4-2) all he would need in the top half of the second as Vince Gonzalez doubled to left to begin the inning, moved to third on a one-out single by Clayton Prestridge, and came home on a Jake Gallaway infield single. Bart Steponovich beat out an infield single to load the bases, and Cody Hough lined out to third, but Prestridge was able to score thanks to a throwing error by third baseman Marc Vanning.
UCSB scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the second as Joey Wallace drew a one-out walk, promptly stole second and third, and came home one batter later on a Steven Moon single to center.
The Highlanders got that run back and more in the top of the third as Phil Holinsworth led off the inning with a double, and David Andriese traded places with him with a double to left of his own. After Vince Gonzalez sacrificed Andriese to third, Drake Zarate singled to right to make it 4-1 UC Riverside.
Orozco allowed base runners in each of the next five innings, but none were able to advance past second base.
Mark Garcia came on in relief to start the bottom of the eighth, and he retired all six batters he faced for his first save of the season.
The rubber match of the conference-opening, three-game series between these clubs is slated for Sunday, April 1 beginning at 1 pm PT.
