Box Score - UC Riverside 2, Saint Joseph's 1
Box Score - Michigan State 15, UC Riverside 6 (5 innings)
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside softball team split a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Saint Joseph's by a score of 2-1, but falling in the night cap 15-6 to Michigan State.
Against the Hawks, the Highlanders fell behind in the second inning as Saint Joseph's executed a double steal, sending one runner home.
UCR tied the game two innings later, though, as Ariel Shore singled to lead off the frame and reached on Alaina Thomas' bunt.
The Highlanders then scored the go-ahead run in the fifth on Alexis Pickett's RBI single.
The 2-1 score would hold the remaining two innings as UC Riverside secured the victory.
Jordyn McDonald picked up the win for the Highlanders, pitching all seven innings while striking out six. Taryn Ashway was saddled with the loss for the Hawks, giving up both runs in 3.1 innings of work.
Game two against Michigan State was a slugfest early on, as the teams combined for 14 runs through two innings. The Spartans touched UCR starter Taylor Alvarez for four runs in the first, as eight batters came to the plate.
The Highlanders battled back by scoring two runs in their respective frame. With runners at first and second, Pickett singled to left field, and the left fielder bobbled the ball which allowed both runners to cross home plate.
MSU batted around the order in the second as they again scored four runs. Alvarez gave way to Amy Lwin in the circle, and after allowing a three-RBI home run, got out of the inning without another run coming home.
UC Riverside matched the Spartans in the bottom of the second, however, also scoring four runs. With runners at first and second, Kayla White's single brought home Yesenia Duenas for one run.
Dionne Anderson then doubled to right center, scoring an additional two runners, and Pickett's subsequent single plated the last run as UCR cut the lead to 8-6.
The Spartans were not done scoring as they plated three more runs in the fourth, and an additional four in the fifth inning. The game ended after the Highlanders batted in the fifth due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Alvarez took the loss for UCR, giving up nine runs in 2.0 innings of work. MSU's Shelby Wise earned the win, pitching the last three innings and giving up just a single run.
The Highlanders now host Eastern Kentucky in a doubleheader starting at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, March 7 at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside.
