Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team (5-8) came into this weekend's three-game series against Sacramento State having scored five or fewer runs in 10 of 12 games so far this season, but they exploded for 15 runs Friday night in a 15-4 win over the Hornets.
Hunter Greenwood (1-3) got the start for Sacramento State (5-8), but he only made it through one plus innings as the Highlanders touched him for seven hits and four walks which led to nine runs, all of which were earned.
Daniel Kopas relieved Greenwood with nobody out in the second, Highlanders on first and third, and the score already 8-0. He retired the first batter he faced, and the second batter, Vince Gonzalez, made it 9-0 with an RBI ground out. But Kopas plunked Drake Zarate with a pitch, gave up a double to Cody Hough down the right field line and allowed Bart Steponovich to drive in a run with an infield single. Jake Gallaway then singled up the middle scoring Hough before Kopas finally worked his way out of the inning.
The Highlanders added a single run in the bottom of the third and three more in the fourth. Meanwhile, UC Riverside starter Dylan Stuart (2-2) allowed just a single run in his first four innings of work, but in the top of the fifth, he gave up a lead off walk and three doubles which cut the UCR advantage to 15-4.
Donovan Gonzales took over for Stuart in the sixth allowing just one hit in his two innings of work. Antonio Gonzales then took to the hill throwing a scoreless eight inning, and Joie Dunyon worked a scoreless ninth.
Phil Holinsworth went two-for-three on the night with three runs scored and four RBIs, while Eddie Young went three-for-three with three RBIs, Devyn Bolasky went two-for-two with three runs scored and Zarate went two-for-two with two runs scored and two runs batted in.
The Highlanders and Hornets square off against one another again on Saturday, March 10 beginning at 6 pm PT.
