Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team (4-8) will try to get its offense re-energized this weekend as they host Sacramento State (5-7) for a three-game series at the Riverside Sports Complex beginning Friday, March 9 at 6 pm PT.
The Highlanders have scored more than five runs on just two occasions so far this season, and have been held to four or fewer eight times. The team's on base percentage of .363 is respectable, but where it is really struggling is in the power department where they are slugging just .300 on the year.
UC Riverside's rotation remains the same with Dylan Stuart (1-2, 4.29) getting the nod on Friday night, Eddie Orozco (2-1, 2.45) taking the hill on Saturday evening, and Trevor Frank (0-2, 5.62) taking the ball on Sunday afternoon.
Orozco has been UC Riverside's best starter on the year, bouncing back from a tough first outing to post wins in each of his last two starts including one over #12 Arizona State. Over his last two starts the senior right-hander has thrown 14.0 innings allowing just 11 hits, striking out 8 while and posting an earned run average of 1.29.
Stuart was masterful in his season-opening win over BYU throwing a complete-game shutout in which he scattered five hits and struck out seven, but over his last two starts he is 0-2 with just five Ks and a 7.50 ERA.
Frank pitched well in a no decision during his first outing of the year, but over his last two starts he has allowed nine earned runs in 11.0 innings.
The Hornets are coming off of a 7-2 mid-week win over Creighton. Prior to that they were swept in a three-game series at UCLA by a combined 22-6 score. Their weekend rotation consists of three right-handers: Hunter Greenwood (1-2, 4.60) on Friday, Tanner Mendonca (2-1, 1.57) on Saturday, and Brennan Leitao (0-0, 7.15) on Sunday.
Three Sac State position players are hitting .300 or better on the year— outfielder Kyle Moses (.435/.519/.522), outfielder Rhys Hoskins (.433/.485/.700) and third baseman Will Soto (/300/.408/.500)—but Moses hasn't played over the last four games.
Saturday's game is slated to start at 6 pm, while Sunday's first pitch is set for 1 pm.
