Box Score - UC Davis 3, UC Riverside 1
Box Score - UC Riverside 8, UC Davis 0 (6 innings)
Davis, CA - The UC Riverside softball team got its 2012 Big West Conference season underway on Sunday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader at UC Davis, falling 3-1 in game one but winning 8-0 in six innings in game two.
In game one, UC Davis (11-22, 1-1) plated single runs in both the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. Meanwhile, the Highlanders (18-16, 1-1) were without a base runner until the third inning when Yesenia Duenas drew a walk.
UC Riverside finally got on board in the sixth as Kayla White led off with a solo home run to centerfield as the lead was cut in half, 2-1.
The Aggies used a sac fly to get that one run back in the bottom half of that frame, however, as the game ended with that 3-1 score.
Jordyn McDonald suffered the loss for the Highlanders, while Justine Vela earned the win for UCD.
UC Riverside's offense came alive in the nightcap, outscoring the Aggies 8-0 and out-hitting them 12-4.
After two scoreless innings, the Highlanders got on board with two runs in the third. With the bases loaded and nobody out, consecutive sac flys from Jessica Vasser and Alexis Pickett put UCR on top.
UC Riverside chased Aggies starting pitcher Jessica Thweatt as they added two more runs an inning later to increase the lead to 4-0. With runners at second and third, Dionne Anderson's RBI fielder's choice scored the first run, and a single from Brittany Keeney scored the second.
The Highlanders put the game away in the sixth, scoring four runs on three hits and three defensive errors by the Aggies to go up 8-0.
The game then ended after the bottom of the sixth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule.
Taylor Alvarez pitched the shutout for the Highlanders, while Thweatt was saddled with the loss.
For the day, White led UCR with four hits, three runs, and two RBI.
The Highlanders conclude the three-game series with the Aggies on Monday, April 2 at 12:00 pm in Davis, CA.
