Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team welcomes CSU Bakersfield to the Riverside Sports Complex this weekend for a three-game series beginning Friday evening at 6 pm PT. Inclement weather is expected at some point over the weekend, so fans are encouraged to check gohighlanders.com or follow the Highlanders on twitter and Facebook to get the latest on any postponements or time changes.
The Highlanders are coming off of an emotional 8-7, 11-inning loss to Pepperdine in which they appeared to have the game both won and lost over the final few innings of play. But the Waves scored a single run in the top of the 11th to send UC Riverside to its third consecutive defeat and seventh in nine games.
The UC Riverside offense was a bright spot in Tuesday's loss as the seven runs the Highlanders scored were the most since a 15-run outburst in a 15-4 win over Sacramento State on March 9.
Kevin Davidson, making his UCR debut as a designated hitter, went three-for-five on the day with an RBI, as the Highlanders six through nine slots went a combined six for 15 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
Eddie Young went two for four with two runs and an RBI increasing his team-high batting average and on base percentage to .341 and .434 respectively.
The Highlanders will start Dylan Stuart (3-3, 3.78) on Friday and Eddie Orozco (4-3, 2.18) on Saturday. Sunday's starter is TBD based on the pitchers used in the first two games of the series.
The Roadrunners enter the weekend series with a 15-16 record. Their most recent decision was a 4-3 loss at Cal State Northridge on Tuesday afternoon. Prior to that loss, CSU Bakersfield won eight of nine games to move back to the .500 mark.
The Runners have just two batters hitting better than .300—infielder Oscar Sanay (.347) and catcher Frank Martinez (.340). As a team, CSUB has an offensive slash line of .269 avg/.351 obp/.359 slg.
Bakersfield's pitching staff boasts an ERA of 3.42 on the season. The Roadrunners will throw left hander Jeff McKenzie (2-3, 1.92) on Friday, right hander Scott Brattvet (3-3, 4.47) on Saturday and lefty Taylor Aikenhead (6-3, 3.26) on Sunday. Aikenhead is the NCAA's Division I leader in complete games this season with five.
