Roadrunners Take Series With 6-3 Win Over UC Riverside Baseball

Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team (10-18) was looking for just its second weekend series win of the season Sunday afternoon, but it was CSU Bakersfield (17-17) scoring six runs in the first four innings, holding on for a 6-3 victory.
Mitch Patito (1-3) got the start for the Highlanders, but was unable to break out of his modus operandi for the season, as he struck out six batters in two-and-two-thirds innings of work, but allowed five hits, three walks and four runs before being lifted with two gone in the third inning.
Frank Martinez leveled the big blow against Patito in the third inning by ripping a 3-1 pitch over the left field wall with two runners on base to put Bakersfield up 4-0.
Mark Garcia came out of the pen two batters later as Patito approached the 80 pitch mark. Garcia got Tyler Shryock to line out to second to end the inning, but in the top of the fourth, the Runners led off the frame with a single by Andrew Letourneau, a run scoring triple by pinch hitter Garrett Pierce, and a sac fly off the bat of Kevin Younger to give CSUB a six-run cushion.
In the meantime, the Highlanders were not without their own scoring opportunities as they left six runners on base through the first four innings of play. That included a bases loaded and no out situation in the second that saw the Runners escape thanks to an infield fly rule pop up, and a double play grounder.
UC Riverside threatened again in the bottom of the fifth as they put runners on first and second thanks to walks by Eddie Young and Phil Holinsworth. But Vince Gonzalez hit into a 4-3-6 triple play, and the Runners once again emerged unscathed.
CSU Bakersfield starter Taylor Aikenhead only lasted one inning for the Roadrunners, as he was lifted after one batter in the second inning due to an undisclosed injury.
Hayden Carter (1-1) took over on the hill for CSUB and went the final eight innings bending, but not breaking.
The Highlanders stranded two runners in the bottom of the sixth and another runner in the seventh, before finally denting the scoring column in the bottom of the eighth. Clayton Prestridge singled through the left side with one out, and Kevin Davidson drew a walk one batter later. The next hitter, Kyle Boudreau drilled a three-run shot over the right field fence for the first home run of his career cutting the CSUB lead in half (watch the video).
It was too little, too late, however, as the Highlanders went in order in the bottom of the ninth, and CSU Bakersfield had the series win in hand.
UC Riverside continues its 12-game home stand this week with a pair of games against UNLV. Tuesday's first pitch is slated for 6 pm PT, while Wednesday's is scheduled for 3 pm.
