Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team was looking for its third straight victory Friday evening and trying to climb back into the Big West Conference race in the process, but it was UC Davis scoring six runs in the first three innings en route to a 7-2 victory.
Dylan Stuart (4-4) got the start for the Highlanders looking to earn his fifth win of the season against Dayne Quist (6-0), last week's Big West Co-Pitcher of the Week.
Stuart got off to a rocky start in the first inning for UC Riverside (12-19, 2-5) logging 35 pitches while giving up three runs on five hits before the Highlanders got their first turn at bat.
After striking out the first hitter, Stuart gave up a double to David Popkins and an infield single to Paul Politi. Nick Lynch then singled through the left side scoring Popkins with the first run of the evening. UC Davis (14-19, 3-4) scored two more runs in the first as Eric Johnson laced a double to left center putting the Aggies ahead 3-0.
Stuart pitched a scoreless second inning, and got the first two outs in the third, but UCD was able to mount a two-out rally and double its lead. Eric Johnson drew a walk to get things started, and after Morgan singled to right, Scott Kalush walked to load the bases. Stuart continued to struggle with his control walking Evan Heptig forcing Johnson home. Tino Lipson then hit a lined shot to first base that Vince Gonzalez was unable to hold on to, and as the ball dribbled out into shallow right, two more runs came home.
Meanwhile, the Highlanders put runners in scoring position in the first and third, but were unable to score. Quist retired the side in order in the fourth and fifth, and by that time, he had a 7-0 lead as Lipson's ground out in the top of the fifth scored Kalush who opened the inning with a triple to left
The Highlanders finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth as Eddie Young opened the frame with a single to left, and Phil Holinsworth singled to center. Two batters later, Clayton Prestridge drew a walk, and then Kevin Davidson hit a chopper to third that scored Young. The Aggies third baseman, Politi, didn't have time to make the play at first but threw anyway sailing the ball wide of the bag as Holinsworth scampered home on the miscue.
But that was all UC Riverside could muster as Quist scattered six hits over eight innings while striking out 11, and Harry Stanwyck threw a perfect ninth to close out the game.
The Highlanders and Aggies continue their three-game weekend series with a 6 pm start on Saturday, April 21.
