Frank Throws Complete-Game, Three-Hitter In 8-0 Win Over UC Davis
4/22/2012 1:08:00 PM | Baseball
Riverside—UC Riverside starter Trevor Frank allowed just three hits Sunday afternoon in a complete game, 8-0, victory over UC Davis giving the junior his first win in more than a year, and pitching the Highlanders to their first conference series win of the season.
Frank last walked off the field with a W by his name on April 17, 2011 in a 14-2 victory at Long Beach State. In that game, he allowed five hits and two earned runs over eight innings while striking out six Dirtbags.
Over his next 13 starts, the right-hander posted an 0-7 record with an ERA of 4.23, and in 2012, he was 0-5 with an earned run average of 4.57.
None of that mattered on Sunday, as Frank needed just 95 pitches to dispense with the Aggies (14-21, 3-6) facing just four batters over the minimum, and allowing just one base runner to move into scoring position the entire game.
Meanwhile, the UC Riverside (14-19, 4-5) offense touched Aggies starter Tom Briner (2-5) for 10 hits and two walks over six innings, scoring single runs in the third, fourth and fifth, and plating a pair in the sixth. Chris Levy took over for Briner in the seventh, but he plunked two batters and walked another to load the bases. UCD then turned to Craig Lanza to get out of the jam, but Kyle Boudreau's sharply hit grounder to first bounced off of Eric Johnson's chest, and by the time the Aggies corralled the baseball, two more Highlanders had crossed the plate.
Number nine hitter Alex Rubanowitz seemed to be in the middle of every UC Riverside rally, scoring the Highlanders first run of the day after leading off the bottom of the third with a double down the right field line. After Eddie Young sacrificed him to third, Phil Holinsworth brought him home with a sacrifice fly to center.
A double play grounder in the bottom of the fourth scored David Andriese with UCR's second run of the day, but in the fifth, Rubanowitz again led of the inning with a base knock, scoring two batters later on Holinsworth's second sac fly of the day.
In the Highlanders sixth, Rubanowitz drove in a pair with a two-out double to make the score 5-0 UC Riverside.
The Highlanders hit the road for their next six games beginning with a Tuesday, April 24 trip to San Diego. First pitch is slated for 3 pm PT.
