Las Vegas, NV—The UC Riverside Baseball Team (14-23) concludes its six-game road trip this week with a pair of games against the UNLV Rebels (20-24). Tuesday's first pitch is slated for 6:05 pm PT, and Wednesday's start is scheduled for 3:05 pm.
The Highlanders lost the first four games of their current road trip—one at #16 San Diego and three over the weekend at UC Irvine. The last time UC Riverside lost four in a row was from May 6-10 of 2011 when they were swept by #10 Cal State Fullerton and dropped a weekday decision at San Diego. The last UCR Baseball Team to drop five in a row was the 2009 version, which lost at CSU Bakersfield on April 11, to LMU on April 14, and a three-game series loss to #3 UC Irvine.
UC Riverside swept a pair from the Rebels two weeks ago winning by 3-1 and 13-5 scores. That ran the Highlanders winning streak over UNLV to six straight.
Dylan Stuart (4-5, 4.34) will get the start for UCR on Tuesday with Mitch Patito (2-3, 4.60) taking the mound on Wednesday. Stuart has struggled over his last two appearances, vs. UC Davis and at UC Irvine, allowing 17 hits and 10 earned runs in just 7.1 innings of work. Patito suffered from control problems in his last outing lasting just two innings at #16 San Diego walking four, allowing two hits and giving up two earned runs.
Vince Gonzalez is the proud owner of an eight-game hitting streak, and he now leads the Highlanders in batting average (.345) and slugging percentage (.403). He is hitting .424 (14-33) over that eight-game stretch with four multiple-hit games. Eddie Young's .431 on base percentage still tops the squad.
The Rebels are 3-3 since their losses at Riverside earlier in the year sweeping Air Force and losing three in a row at New Mexico.
UNLV boasts one of the most statistically potent offenses in the nation with an overall slash line of .298/.382/.321, but they also have one of the most hitter friendly parks in the nation according to boydsworld.com.
Outfielder Trevor Kirk is flirting with a .400 batting average, entering the week at .391 to go along with a .462 on base percentage and a .559 slugging percentage. Outfielder Brandon Nayardi isn't far behind him with a slash line of .372/.473/.604.
Following their two games with UNLV, the Highlanders return home for a three-game, Big West Conference series vs. Cal State Northridge.
