Baseball Gives Up Four Runs Early As Cal Poly Cruises To 11-2 Victory
5/25/2012 6:27:00 PM | Baseball
Riverside—The Cal Poly Mustangs scored four runs in the top of the second inning Friday evening and never looked back on their way to an 11-2 win over UC Riverside.
UCR senior starter Eddie Orozco, making what was likely his last appearance for the Highlanders, retired the Mustangs in order in the top of the first inning, but the second was a different story.
After striking out clean up hitter Jimmy Allen for the first out, Orozco gave up a long fly ball to right off the bat of DH Alex Michaels. Right fielder David Andriese leaped at the wall and appeared to have the ball bounce of his glove as he crashed into the fence. By the time Andriese got the ball back into the infield. Michaels was on third with a triple.
It was the first of five straight hits for Cal Poly as they hung a four spot on the board. The big blow came off the bat of Chris Hoo who sent an 0-1 offering over the left field wall for a three-run homer.
It remained a 4-0 game until the top of the fifth when Cal Poly put runners on first and second with a one-out double and a walk. After a fielder's choice put runners at the corners, Michaels hit what looked like an inning-ending grounder to second baseman Nick Vilter. But the ball took a huge hop on the lip of the grass, bounding over Vilter's head and into right field to give the Mustangs a 5-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Cal Poly starter Joey Wagman was nearly unhittable with Vince Gonzalez's infield single serving as the Highlanders only base knock in the first five innings of play.
Eddie Young picked up hit number two for UC Riverside in the bottom of the sixth lacing a one-out double to right center. One out later, Gonzalez ripped a single to center for the Highlanders first run of the game.
The Mustangs got that run right back in the top of the seventh, however, as Michaels' sac fly to left scored Mitch Haniger.
Kevin Sprague took over for Orozco to start the top of the eighth retiring the first batter he faced, but the Mustangs strung together a single, a walk, a hit batter, a sac fly and a three-run home run off of Haniger's bat to put Cal Poly up 10-1.
The Mustangs tacked on one more run in the top of the ninth, and Kyle Boudreau's RBI double in the bottom half of the frame ended the scoring for the night.
The Highlanders and Mustangs square off for game two of their three-game Big West Conference series on Saturday, May 26 at 6 pm PT.
