Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team (22-29, 9-12) returns home this weekend to wrap up the 2012 regular season with a three-game conference series against Cal Poly (33-20, 13-8). The Highlanders are currently in seventh place in the Big West, but just one game out of the fifth spot. The Mustangs are two games behind front-running Cal State Fullerton.
UCR is coming off of a 14-9 road victory at USC, and a two-games-to-one series victory at Cal State Fullerton. The Titans had not lost a conference series at home since April 17-19, 2009 against Pacific.
Dylan Stuart (7-6, 3.77) earned conference pitcher of the week honors as he threw a six-hit, 1-0 shutout on Sunday to clinch the series for the Highlanders. He will get the start this Sunday as well, as UC Riverside honors its four seniors prior to first pitch. Eddie Orozco (5-6, 2.46) gets the start on Friday with Trevor Frank (2-7, 3.82) going on Saturday.
Cal Poly has won 11 of its last 14 games including a sweep against UC Santa Barbara over the weekend. It was the Mustangs fifth such sweep of the season as they also blanked Oklahoma State, Loyola Marymount, UC Irvine and Pacific.
The Mustangs enter the week with the highest batting average (.290) in the conference and the top on base percentage (.366) while averaging the second most runs per game (5.9) in the Big West. Their top hitters are shortstop Mike Miller (.364, 16 doubles, 33 RBI), third basemen Jimmy Allen (.346, 16 doubles, 42 RBI), and center fielder Mitch Haniger (.342, 12 HR, 58 RBI).
Cal Poly ranks fourth on ERA in the conference (3.49) while the Highlanders are ranked right behind them with an ERA of 3.70. The probable pitchers for the Mustangs are Joey Wagman (8-3, 2.42) on Friday, Kyle Anderson (9-1. 3.63) on Saturday and Bryan Granger (0-1, 4.50) on Sunday.
