Box Score - UC Riverside 3, Fairleigh Dickinson 0
Hempstead, NY—Senior Amanda Vialpando led all players with a double-double 15 kills and 14 digs on Friday afternoon to guide the UC Riverside Volleyball Team to a 3-0 victory in the 2012 season opener over Fairleigh Dickinson at the Hofstra Asics Invitational.
"Each time you go out on the court you hope that you will compete with composure. That you will remember what you have been working on during practice. And then you will execute and win," Head Coach Ron Larsen stated. "Today we did just that. Tomorrow will be another day and the competition will improve but so will we."
The Highlanders (1-0) won in straight sets 25-10, 25-20, and 25-10 while hitting .326 as a team and limiting the Knights (0-1) to a -.012 hitting percentage.
"This was a team effort," Larsen said. "But it was a great way for Emily Borges to start her collegiate career by setting our team to a .326 hitting percentage. She showed poise and confidence for her first ever match."
UCR turned a 4-3 lead early in the first set into a 11-4 advantage by going on a 7-1 tear. Four different Highlanders recorded a kill during that run, while FDU committed three errors.
UC Riverside continued to attack and led 19-10 before closing out the set with six straight points.
Fairleigh Dickinson came out of the gate strong in the second set, opening a 3-0 lead. However, the Highlanders quickly countered scoring five consecutive points to take a 5-3 lead. UCR pushed its advantage out to 18-10, but the Knights made a 9-3 run to close to just two, 21-19.
UCR still led by two, 22-20, but consecutive kills from Ashley Cox made it 24-20, and Megan Reza gave the Highlanders the 25-20 victory with her kill to close out the set.
In the third set, the Knights were no match for UC Riverside as the Highlanders quickly opened an 11-1 lead. Shelby LeDuff served for nine straight points during that run as UCR cruised to the 25-10 win.
After Vialpando's double-double, Cox added eight kills for UCR while Megan Patterson had 11 digs.
"Cox, another freshman, played in her first collegiate match and hit an impressive .571 with no errors after subbing in," Larsen explained. "And of course Amanda continued to show why she was first team All Big West by starting off by hitting .556 with 2 service aces."
The Highlanders continue the Hofstra Asics Invitational with a noon PT match on Saturday against Providence, and conclude the tournament with a 4:30 pm match against the host Pride.
