Highlanders Volleyball Falls 3-0 To Hofstra In Invitational Finale

Hempstead, NY - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team had its perfect season come to an end Saturday evening falling 3-0 to Hofstra in the Asics Invitational finale.
Amanda Vialpando led UCR with 10 kills while Ashley Cox added eight kills and 10 digs, and Megan Patterson led all players with 16 digs.
The Highlanders (2-1) and Pride (4-0) battled through 33 tie scores and 13 lead changes throughout the three sets, with Hofstra coming out on top by scores of 25-20, 25-22, and 26-24.
Down 10-7 in the first set, the Highlanders scored four of the next five points to tie the set at 11. After three more tie scores, the Pride went on a 4-0 run to open the set at 18-14. UC Riverside cut the lead to three, but could get no closer as Hofstra won 25-20.
Sets two and three were tight battles as both saw 13 tie scores apiece.
Tied at 17-17 in the second, consecutive service aces by Cox put the Highlanders up by two. UCR still led 22-21 late in the set, but another 4-0 Pride run put the set out of reach, 25-22.
The Pride led 23-21 late in the third set, but a Vialpando kill and service ace tied things at 23, and a kill from Shelby LeDuff put the Highlanders on top, 24-23.
Hofstra rallied after its timeout to tie the set at 24, and used a UCR error and a Kelsie Wills kill to complete the 3-0 sweep.
Vialpando was named to the Hofstra Asics Invitational All-Tournament Team for her efforts throughout the weekend.
UC Riverside will now head to Spokane, WA for the Gonzaga Invitational beginning on Friday, August 31.
