Box Score - UC Riverside 3, Providence 0
Hempstead, NY - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team moved to 2-0 on the young season Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over Providence College at the Hofstra Asics Invitational. The Highlanders perfect mark to start the year is the team's first-ever 2-0 mark in the program's Division I history.
"As was expected, today was a tougher test than yesterday," Head Coach Ron Larsen explained. "We came out a little tentative and Providence didn't. I liked how we settled down and improved each game."
UC Riverside bettered its hitting percentage from the day before, posting a .375 clip, while winning 25-21, 25-20, and 25-14. Shelby LeDuff led all players with 17 kills while Amanda Vialpando added 12.
"It was a really nice effort by Shelby in hitting .556 to lead our team," Larsen further stated. "It is nice to see the improvement by our freshmen each game and match."
The Highlanders led 6-1 early in set one, but Providence (0-4) came back to tie the set at 12. UCR then turned a 13-13 tie in a 16-13 lead, and pushed its advantage out to five, 21-16, following a Megan Reza kill.
After a Providence timeout, the Friars scored two straight to close the gap to three, but the Highlanders responded and never let the lead dip beyond that point as they held on for the 25-21 win.
The second set saw 11 tie scores and five lead changes, the last coming on a service error by PC's Jordan Wiesler to put UCR on top for good, 18-17.
Still leading by just one, 21-20, the Highlanders used a Bianca Endersby kill and consecutive attacks from Vialpando to go up at set-point, 24-20. An error by the Friars was all UCR needed to close out the set with a 25-20 victory.
Leading 6-5 in the third set, UC Riverside went on a 7-0 run to open up the set and go up 13-5. Vialpando served for six of those points and recorded two aces during the rally.
The Highlanders continued to attack and closed out the set on a 6-1 run to complete the 25-14 victory.
UCR concludes the Invitational on Saturday evening with a 4:30 pm PT match against the host Pride.
