Box Score—UC Riverside 3, Florida Atlantic 2
Tempe, AZ—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team won a five-set thriller against Florida Atlantic Friday afternoon in game one of the ASU Sheraton Invitational, winning the first set 25-12 but losing sets two and three by identical 25-23 scores. UCR came back for a 25-23 victory in the fourth set, and earned a 15-12 win in the fifth to claim the match.
The win snaps a five-match skid for the Highlanders (4-6), who opened the year going 3-1.
UC Riverside jumped out of the gate strong in set one, opening a 9-0 advantage on kills from Amanda Vialpando, Emily Borges, and Annishia McKoy, and three errors from the Owls (2-5). After allowing one point, the Highlanders scored eight straight to put the set out of reach, 17-1, en route to their 25-12 win.
The second set saw the reverse, as FAU went up 5-0 early in the frame, and still led, 16-10, midway through. The Highlanders mounted a comeback and closed to one, 18-17, before tying the set at 21.
The teams traded points until Florida Atlantic led at set-point, 24-22. A Vialpando kill made it 24-23, but an Owl kill put the set away, 25-23, as the match was evened at 1-1.
The thirt set was very much of a back-and-forth battle as there were nine tie scores and five lead changes. Neither team led by more than three points, and the score was still tied late in the set at 22-22.
Two straight Highlanders errors proved costly, however, as the Owls took advantage of those miscues in a 25-23 victory to go up 2-1 in the match.
UC Riverside withstood a late FAU rally to keep the match alive in the fourth set. The Highlanders were up 19-15 but allowed three consecutive Owls points. Similar to the prior set, errors proved costly as FAU this time committed two straight errors, and UCR took advantage to win 25-23.
In the final set, the Highlanders led from the beginning, but eight tie scores kept the match close. UCR never led by more than two, but turned a 12-12 tie into a 15-12 win thanks to another McKoy kill, and capitalizing on consecutive FAU errors.
This is the first five-set victory for UC Riverside since a 3-2 win at UC Santa Barbara on October 15.
Vialpando led all players with 23 kills, while Shelby LeDuff added 14. Both players recorded double-doubles with 12 digs apiece.
The Highlanders continue the ASU Sheraton Invitational with a 8 pm match against the host Sun Devils on Friday evening.
