
Gonzaga Earns Sweep Over UCR Volleyball On Day Two Of ASU Invitational

Tempe, AZ—The UC Riverside Volleyball Team continued play at the ASU Sheraton Invitational Saturday morning with a 3-0 loss to Gonzaga by the scores of 25-20, 25-13 and 25-20.
Amanda Vialpando led the team with 10 kills while Shelby LeDuff added six, and Megan Patterson recorded a match-high 10 digs.
These two teams met previously this season with the Zags also picking up a sweep, 25-22, 25-19, and 25-21, on September 1 (box score/recap).
In Saturday's match, the Bulldogs (8-4) jumped out of the gate strong in set one by opening a 6-1 lead. The Highlanders (4-8) responded with four straight points off kills from Megan Reza and LeDuff to close the gap to 6-5.
Gonzaga pushed its lead back out to four, 10-6, and the teams took turns scoring until UCR again closed to one, 17-16, following an Ashley Cox kill.
The Zags rallied for six of the next eight points, however, widening the lead to 23-18 before holding on for the 25-20 win.
The Bulldogs again came out strong in the next set, opening a 9-1 lead and pushing the score out of reach at 17-3 before cruising to a 25-13 victory.
The Highlanders made a push in the third set, though, using seven tie scores and four lead changes to keep the match close.
UCR scored six of the first eight points of the set and led by five, 10-5, following a kill from Monique Holt. Gonzaga would eventually tie the set at 13, and the teams traded points with four more tie scores until 19-19.
Unfortunately for the Highlanders, the Bulldogs made a late run scoring six of the final seven points to close out the set, 25-20.
UC Riverside concludes play at the ASU Sheraton Invitational with a 5 pm PT match against Villanova on Saturday evening.
