UCR Drops 3-1 Match At Arizona State

Tempe, AZ - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team played its second match of the day Friday evening, losing in four sets to Arizona State in the ASU Sheraton Invitational: 25-16, 23-25, 25-22, and 25-12.
Amanda Vialpando led UCR (4-7) with 15 kills while Megan Patterson recorded 16 digs, and Shelby LeDuff and Megan Reza both added four blocks apiece.
The Highlanders led 7-5 early in set one, but the Sun Devils (9-2) scored four straight to go up 9-7. UCR scored three of the next four points to tie the set at 10, but ASU rallied for five unanswered points to take a 15-10 advantage.
UC Riverside closed to two, 15-13, but Arizona State outscored the Highlanders 9-1 to put the set out of reach before winning 25-16.
UCR led wire-to-wire in the second set, and withstood a late rally to win 25-23.
The Highlanders jumped out to a 4-0 lead and pushed their advantage to eight, 18-10, following a Megan Reza kill. ASU rallied, though, outscoring UCR 11-4 to cut the gap to 22-21.
The teams traded points until a Vialpando kill put the Highlanders up at set-point, 24-22. ASU got one back, but another Vialpando kill sealed the set win for UC Riverside, 25-23.
Arizona State jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in set three, but the Highlanders rallied to tie it at 10-10. After trading points, the Sun Devils went up 19-15, and the Highlanders never got closer than two as ASU took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-22 victory.
In the fourth set, the Sun Devils jumped out to an early lead en route to a 25-12 victory to conclude the match with a 3-1 win.
The Highlanders continue play at the ASU Sheraton Invitational with a noon PT match against Gonzaga, and a 5 pm contest against Villanova on Saturday.
