Riverside—The UC Riverside Men’s Basketball Team is looking to get back on the winning track in Big West play as the Highlanders host UC Irvine this evening at 7 pm PT.
Chris Harriel’s three-pointer with nine seconds remaining in regulation Thursday sent UCR’s game against Long Beach State into overtime, but the 49ers scored the first 10 points of the extra period en route to a 91-82 win (box score/recap).
Chris Patton scored a career-high 21 points in the loss and now leads the Big West in field goal percentage in conference games connecting at a 71.1 percent clip from the floor. He is also the Highlanders leading scorer at 11.6 points per game. Harriel is also averaging in double figures at 10.7 points per contest.
UC Riverside broke out of a season-long three-point slump against Long Beach State making 10 of 24 shots from long distance. The last time the Highlanders made more than 10 threes in a game was back on December 19, 2010 when they made 11 of 19 threes in a 78-67 victory over Montana State (box score/recap).
The ‘Eaters have won three straight games to pull into a tie for second place in the Big West, and move to 10-9 overall. They took UCLA to overtime in their second game of the season, and beat USC on the road, 64-61, on December 20.
Daman Starring leads the UC Irvine offense averaging 13.7 points per game thanks to a 47.0 shooting performance from long distance. Four other members of the squad are averaging between 8.0 and 9.5 points per game, including Adam Folker (9.2), who connects on 58.2 percent of his shots from the floor.
Defensively, the Anteaters are holding opponents to 37.5 percent shooting from the field and 31.0 percent from three-point range.
The Highlanders have won five of the last six meetings against the Anteaters including a 72-69 overtime victory on March 3 of last year (box score/recap). UCR is now 22-29 all-time against UC Irvine (all-time results).
