Riverside—The UC Riverside Men’s Basketball team returns to the SRC Arena for the start of a three-game home stand beginning with a Thursday, 7 pm tilt against Hawai'i. The Highlanders will also honor Larry Cunningham '07, the team's all-time leading scorer, at halftime as part of the team's series of Bring Back The Past events.
UC Riverside has gotten its offense in gear over the past seven games shooting better than 50 percent from the floor in five of those contests, and topping 37.5 percent from three-point range in four straight. The Highlanders are averaging 65.4 points per game during Big West play after averaging just 57.9 in non-conference competition.
Chris Patton has continued to up his game and is now shooting 53.5 percent from the field overall (6th in the Big West) and 67.5 percent in conference games (1st). Chris Harriel (10. ppg) and Josh Fox (10.5) are also averaging in double figures.
The Rainbow Warriors are coming off of their first-ever Big West Conference road win in a 78-73 win over UC Santa Barbara at the Thunderdome on Saturday.
Junior Chris Standhardinger's career-high 31 points and 16 rebounds fueled the Rainbow Warriors victory, and marked the most points by a rainbow Warrior player in a game since Zane Johnson’s 32-point game at UC Davis in February of 2011.
The win against UCSB snapped a two-game losing streak, and moved Hawaii into fourth place in the conference.
Standhardinger is the team's leading scorer averaging 15.5 points a game, eighth best in the Big West. His .571 field goal percentage also ranks eighth in the conference.
Hawai'i boasts two other double-figure scorers in Vander Joaquim (14.0) and Isaac Fotu (10.2). Joaquim ranks 12th in the conference in scoring and second in rebounding at 8.4 boards per game. Fotu is tied for ninth in the conference in rebounding (9th) and first in field goal percentage (.631).
The Rainbow Warriors beat UCR in the first meeting between the clubs this season, 76-61, on January 5 (box score/recap). The Highlanders and Hawai'i split their two previous games.
