Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team built a 14-point, first-half lead Thursday evening, but Hawai'i shot 57.7 percent from the floor in the second half to pick up the 72-68 win (Box Score).
The Highlanders (5-16, 2-7) couldn't miss in the first half draining 53.6 percent of their shots from the floor and 54.5 percent from three-point range. And it was a total team effort as eight players dented the scoring column in the first 20 minutes of play. Josh Fox, Chris Harriel, Chris Patton and Austin Quick each scored six in the period, and UCR led by 14, 32-18 with 6:38 remaining.
By the half it was just a seven point advantage though, as Christian Standhardinger kept the Rainbow Warriors in the game scoring 12 points on 5 of 9 shooting from the floor.
UCR scored on two of its first three possession after the break to push the lead back out to 10, but Hawai'i (12-9, 6-4) countered with an 11-2 run to close to within one, 45-33 with 15:23 on the clock. Brandon Spearman scored the final five points in the run, capping it with a three-pointer.
The Highlanders weathered the storm, though, and six minutes later, they led by 11, 62-51. Spearman stopped the run with a jumper, and on the next Hawai'i possession Standhardinger hit a three to cut the lead to six. Spearman's three with seven minutes on the clock made it a three-point UCR lead, 62-59.
The teams traded baskets over the next two minutes, but the Rainbow Warriors bookended a pair of layups around a UCR miss with 3:32 to go tying the game for the first time since the opening tip, 67-67.
Hawai'i outscored the Highlanders five to one the rest of the way as UC Riverside missed its final five shots and committed two turnovers.
Standhardinger led all scorers with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Spearman finished with 15, and Vander Joaquim added 1o. Patton paced UC Riverside with 13 points, while Quick had 12 off the bench and Fox added 10.
