Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team dropped a 3-0 decision to Cal State Fullerton Saturday evening by the scores of 25-15, 26-24, and 25-20. Cristina Maietta recorded a game-high 12 kills to lead the Highlanders (1-15, 0-4), while two Titans (9-7, 2-2) players had 10 kills apiece.
In set one, UCR turned a 6-3 deficit into a 6-6 tie thanks to a Tyler Dorsey kill, a Maietta service ace, and a CSF attack error. The Titans rebounded for five straight points, however, and the Highlanders never got closer than four the rest of the way.
UC Riverside responded in the second set and led 23-18 late in the frame. It looked as if the match would go into the third set tied at 1-1, but Cal State Fullerton rallied cutting the lead to one, 23-22. That prompted a Highlanders timeout, and UCR responded with an Annishia McKoy kill to go up at set-point, 24-22.
However, the momentum shifted to the Titans as four straight kills completed the come-from-behind, 26-24 victory.
There were seven tie scores and three lead changes in the third set, but late in the set Fullerton took control opening up a 23-16 lead. UC Riverside made one final push and scored three consecutive on kills from Maietta and Bri Holmes, and a block solo by Lindsay Hornsby.
CSF took a timeout at that point, and returned to the court with a kill to go up at match-point, 24-19. A Holmes kill then made it 24-20, but a final kill closed out the set and the match, as the Titans earned the sweep.
In addition to Maietta's 12 kills, Dorsey added nine kills while Holmes and McKoy both had eight. Maddie Hubbell led four players in double-digit digs with 15.
The Highlanders now hit the road for a pair of Big West Conference matches at UC Irvine and Long Beach State on October 18 and 19 respectively.
