Men's Basketball Picks Up 83-73 Preseason Victory Over Visiting Pomona-Pitzer

Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team finished preseason play with an undefeated 4-0 record thanks to an 83-73 victory over visiting Pomona-Pitzer Friday evening.
Chris Patton led four members of the Highlanders in double figure scoring with 27 points and seven rebounds as UCR shot 53.7 percent from the field in the win. Steven Thornton added 19 points, Nick Gruninger chipped in with 14 points, and Sam Finley scored 13.
UC Riverside built a nine point lead at the half, but that margin could have been larger had it not been for the Highlanders five for 12 shooting from the charity stripe in the period. That figure improved in the second half, but UCR still missed 10 of 23 free throws in the final 20 minutes of play.
The Highlanders were deadly from three-point range, however lead by Thornton's four-for-four effort beyond the arc and Gruninger's three for four performance.
UCR owned the paint on the night as well, holding the Sagehens to 12 of 31 from the field from two-point range.
UC Riverside opens regular season play on Friday, November 8 with a 7 pm PT tip at San Diego State.
