San Diego, CA—Following a 4-0 preseason which included three victories on the Highlanders' week-long tour of British Columbia, the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team tips off the 2013-14 regular season at San Diego State this Friday, November 8 at 7 pm PT.
This is the Highlanders first season under Interim Head Coach Dennis Cutts who was promoted over the summer after Head Coach Jim Wooldridge became the university's interim athletics director. Joining Cutts on the sideline are second year assistant Justin Bell, and first year assistants Stephen Sauers and Keith Wilkinson.
UC Riverside returns three starters from a year ago—Chris Patton, Chris Harriel and Austin Quick— in addition to last year's leading scorer off the bench, Taylor Johns. Veterans Lucas Devenny, Steven Jones and Tré Owens also return, and they are joined by six newcomers.
Patton led the Highlanders in scoring during the preseason, averaging 22.5 points per game on 69.4 percent shooting from the field. Freshman Sam Finley added 13.3 points per game, while Taylor Johns averaged 12.0.
The Highlanders and San Diego State have squared off against one another on eight previous occasions, all in San Diego, with the Aztecs winning all eight. The most recent meeting between the clubs was on December 19, 2011 as SDSU secured an 80-55 win (box score/recap).
