11/8/2013 9:14:00 PM | Men's Basketball
San Diego—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team opened its 2013-14 season Friday evening traveling down the I-15 to San Diego State where the Aztecs' defense held the Highlanders to 30.8 percent shooting from the field in a 77-41 victory (Box Score).
Both teams appeared to have some first-game jitters in the early going as they combined for 18 turnovers—11 for UCR and seven for the Aztecs—in the first 10 minutes of play. San Diego State led by just four, 11-7, at that point with Xavier Thames leading the way with seven.
UC Riverside's seventh point came on a three-pointer by Chris Harriel with 13:00 to go in the first, but San Diego State held the Highlanders scoreless for the next 6:54. The Aztecs scored 10 unanswered points over that stretch to push their lead to 14, 21-7.
Sam Finley ended the drought with a slashing drive to the rim with 6:06 remaining in the period, but San Diego State closed out the half outscoring the Highlanders, 17-4.
UC Riverside did a decent job defensively in the first holding the Aztecs to 41.7 percent shooting from the floor, but included in that was a four-for-eight effort from three-point range. SDSU also went 14 for 20 from the charity stripe. The Highlanders, meanwhile made 23.1 percent of their shots and went 0 for 7 from the free throw line.
UC Riverside's shooting improved to 38.5 percent in the second half while the Highlanders held the Aztecs to 41.8 percent shooting for the game, but San Diego State continued to build on its lead thanks in large part to a 27 for 37 effort in the free throw column. The Aztecs led by as many as 43 points in the second half on their way to their ninth straight victory over UC Riverside.
Taylor Johns led the Highlanders with 14 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots, while Austin Quick scored six and Finley added five in his UCR debut. Thames led three Aztecs in double figures with 15 points. He was joined by Josh Davis with 11, and Winston Shepard with 10.
The Highlanders return home this week for a Wednesday, November 13 meeting with Pepperdine. Tip is slated for 7 pm PT.
