Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team returns home this week for a pair of non-conference match ups beginning with a Wednesday, November 13 meeting with Pepperdine at 7 pm PT, and a Saturday, November 16 Homecoming game against Montana State at 4 pm.
The Highlanders faced what will probably be their most difficult test of the 2013-14 campaign in their season opener as they traveled to San Diego State Saturday to tangle with the Aztecs. Taylor Johns just missed out on a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds, but UCR struggled from the field making 30.8 percent of their shots in the 77-41 loss (box score/recap).
UC Riverside and Pepperdine squared off against one another four times during the Highlanders' Division II era, with the Waves winning three of the four meetings between the clubs (view series results). The teams renewed their rivalry last season, and Pepperdine recorded a 62-40 win (box score/recap).
The Waves opened their 2013-14 season with an 81-68 victory over San Diego Christian. Stacy Davis led Pepperdine with 24 points, while Lamond Murray Jr. scored 13 off the bench, and Brendan Lane recorded a 13-point, 14-rebound double-double.
Montana State hosted Cal State Fullerton in its season opener on Sunday dropping an 84-55 decision to the Titans at home. Paul Egwuonwu and Flavien Davis each had 10 points to lead the Bobcats, but Montana State shot just 34.0 percent on the night including 10.0 percent (2 for 20) from three-point range. On the defensive end, the Bobcats allowed Cal State Fullerton to connect on 53.6 percent of its shots including 50.0-percent (9 for 18) from long range.
The Highlanders and Montana State have met on three prior occasions with UC Riverside winning each of the past two including a 75-73 decision on December 11, 2011 (view series results). Phil Martin scored 25 points for the Highlanders in that win, while Robert Smith added 14 and Kareem Nitoto chipped in with 12. UC Riverside erased a four-point deficit over the final 13 seconds to secure the victory with Smith's three-pointer with one second remaining proving to be the game-winning basket (box score/recap)
