UAA Outlasts Women's Basketball, 83-75 In Double OT In Great Alaska Shootout

Anchorage, Alaska - The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team fell to Alaska Anchorage, 83-75, in double overtime on Tuesday evening in the Greak Alaska Shootout, and will play Nicholls in the consolation game on Wednesday at 3:30 pm PT. The Seawolves (5-0) move on to play Georgetown in the Championship game scheduled for Wednesday at 6 pm (Box Score).
The Highlanders (2-3) took a 14-point lead into the half, but the Seawolves tied it up at the end of regulation, and sent the game into double overtime before outscoring UCR 12-4 in the second OT stanza.
Jamila Williams scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Highlanders while Annelise Ito added 19 points and 16 rebounds, and Simone DeCoud had 18 points and 12 rebounds. Kiki Robertson led four UAA players in double-figures with 20 points.
UC Riverside was sluggish out of the gate hitting 2-of-8 from the field, but the Highlanders were down just three, 7-4, at the first media timeout. DeCoud sparked a 5-0 UCR run as she connected on a three-point play, and found a streaking Brittany Crain for a fastbreak layup on the next possession as the Highlanders took their first lead, 9-7, at the 13:52 mark.
The Seawolves scored four of the next six points to go up 11-9, but UCR used a 14-5 run over a four minute span to lead 23-16 with 8:25 left in the half. That 14-5 run was part of a larger 28-12 run to conclude the period as UC Riverside held UAA to one point in the last four and a half minutes, taking a 37-23 lead at the break.
DeCoud scored 11 points off the bench to lead the Highlanders at the half, while Crain, Ito, and Williams all added eight points. UC Riverside increased its field goal percentage to 50.0 percent (14-of-28) in the first period, while limiting the Seawolves to just 21.1 percent (8-of-38).
Alaska Anchorage came out strong in the second half outscoring the Highlanders 16-8 and hitting 6-of-9 from the field to cut the margin to single-digits, 45-39, with 15:03 remaining. Williams and Crain countered with back-to-back buckets to put the lead back to 10, 49-39, but UAA scored eight of the next 10 points to make it a four-point game, 51-47, at the 10:30 mark.
The teams traded points over the next few minutes until the Seawolves closed to their closest margin of the half, 57-54, at 6:44. UAA further closed the lead to just one, 59-58, following a pair of free throws from Robertson, and took their first lead since 11-9 in the first half on a three-pointer from Jessica Madison with 3:51 remaining.
A Williams layup tied the game at 61-61, and Ito scored three straight to put UCR up 64-61 at the 2:56 mark. The Seawolves would tie the game at 64 with three free throws with 53 seconds to go, but the Highlanders turned the ball over on their next possession, giving the ball back to UAA.
Alaska Anchorage then followed with a turnover of its own, as UC Riverside had the opportunity to play for the last shot. But UCR misfired with a second to go, sending the game into overtime for the second time this season.
The Highlanders hit 33.3 percent from the field in the second period while the Seawolves made 41.2 percent of their shots.
UAA scored the first bucket of overtime, but DeCoud scored four straight and Hadley added a layup to make it 70-66 with 2:09 remaining. The Seawolves countered with four unanswered points tying the game at 70 with 1:33 to go. DeCoud was fouled a few seconds later and hit 1-of-2 from the free throw line to put up UCR up 71-70. UAA also went 1-of-2 from the foul line with 55 seconds left after they were fouled, tying the game at 71.
UCR had the ball again on the last possession, and after a miss grabbed an offensive rebound with 17.3 seconds to go. The Highlanders had a look at the basket, but a no-call under the rim sent the game into double overtime.
Heading into the second OT, UC Riverside was without Crain and DeCoud, who both fouled out, and Hadley joined them less than a minute into the second OT stanza with her fifth foul.

UC Riverside is just 1-8 against UAA all-time, and is 1-2 in Great Alaska Shootout games.
