Pair Of Late Goals Gives UC Irvine 2-1 Victory Over Men's Soccer
11/6/2013 9:42:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team entered Wednesday evening's match vs. nationally-ranked UC Irvine with an outside chance at finishing first in the Big West Conference South Division, but a pair of late Anteaters scores gave UCI a 2-1 victory (box score) and the Highlanders postseason fate now rests with the outcome of Saturday night's season finale vs. Cal State Fullerton.
UCR and UCI were tied, 0-0, after the first half, but Andy Contreras changed all of that in the 57th minute. Jonathan Tovar found him streaking down the left side, and Contreras drove into the box beating the Anteaters keeper to put the Highlanders up 1-0.
That score held up until the 79th minute when the Highlanders were called for a foul in their box on a UC Irvine corner kick. Enrique Cardenas converted on the subsequent PK, and the score was tied.
The 'Eaters pinned their ears back, and just over two minutes later, Marco Franco found Christopher Santana who beat KC John to give Irvine its eventual 2-1 margin of victory.
Cal State Fullerton dropped a 1-0 decision to Cal State Northridge on Wednesday, which leaves both UC Riverside and the Titans with 3-5-1 records in conference. The Highlanders defeated Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, on October 26 (box score/recap), and a win or a tie Saturday gives UC Riverside the third and final South Division playoff berth.
The Highlanders will honor their 2014 senior class at 6:45 pm prior to Saturday's match.
