Colorado Springs, CO—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team is taking finals this week, but on Friday the Highlanders pack up their cold weather gear and head to Colorado Territory for a pair of road games. First up is a Saturday, December 14 matinee at Air Force at 1 pm PT, followed by a Monday, December 16 game at Northern Colorado at 6 pm.
UCR beat La Verne on Thursday, December 5 to improve to 3-4 on the season. Chris Patton led five players in double figures scoring 20 points, while the Highlanders made 25 of 27 free throws as a team (box score/recap). That marked the eighth highest single-game free throw percentage in the history of the program.
Taylor Johns continues to pace the UC Riverside offense at 15.4 points per game. He and Patton are both averaging a team-high 7.3 boards per game, and Johns is now making 60.0 percent of his field goal attempts—the fourth highest percentage in the Big West Conference.
Air Force enters the week with a 4-4 record, but plays Western Colorado at home on Monday, December 7. Tre' Coggins leads the Falcons offense at 16.6 points per game followed by Max Yon' at 13.9 points and Marek Olesinski at 13.1.
As a team, Air Force makes 48.0 percent of its shots from the field including 38.5 percent from long distance. They commit just over 15 turnovers per game, however, which has caused them to be outscored overall on the season.
The Highlanders and Falcons have played on just one prior occasion with Air Force topping UC Riverside, 61-53, at the SRC Arena, on December 22, 2012 (box score/recap). Patton led the Highlanders with 14 points off the bench.
Northern Colorado is 4-2 on the year with a game against Colorado on December 10 before welcoming the Highlanders to Butler-Hancock Arena.
Derrick Barden's 14.3 points per game leads the squad. He is joined in double figures by Tevin Svihovec (13.5), Tate Unruh (11.7) and Tim Huskisson (10.3). The Bears are outscoring their opponents by more than six points per game thanks to 46.4 percent shooting from the field and 37.1 percent from three-point range. The Northern Colorado defense is limiting the opposition to 40.5 percent shooting from the floor, and 26.0 percent from beyond the arc.
The Highlanders and Bears met for the first time a year ago as UC Riverside eked out a 69-63 victory over Northern Colorado on December 1, 2012 (box score/recap)
